Father John Schwantes, S.J. entered the Society of Jesus in 1956 at the Jesuit Novitiate in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. His
training in the Society took him from California to St. Louis. He taught at the Jesuit High School in Omaha and was
ordained in 1969. Over the ensuing thirty years, ministry as a Jesuit took Fr. Schwantes to Omaha as director of
campus ministry at Creighton University, to India for six months of spiritual renewal and integration; to the inner
city of St. Louis to work with young Jesuits studying philosophy; to Minneapolis as a superior of a Jesuit community
and to help establish a Jesuit Volunteer community; to Marquette University to assist in the development of the
Center for Ignatian Spirituality, and then to Marquette High as superior of the Jesuit community; and, most
recently, to the Sioux Spiritual Center in South Dakota. Preached and directed retreats over the last thirty years
have given him a deep appreciation for the struggles and joys of lay people in their pilgrimage. He joined the staff
at the Jesuit Retreat House in Oshkosh in April 2001.
