How do we accompany another person as they discern? This workshop for spiritual directors explores the practice of Ignatian discernment as a way of proceeding—attending to the movements of the heart, recognizing consolation and desolation, and accompanying others as they discern significant choices. Together we will explore the spiritual director’s role in discerning with another without discerning for them, drawing on the wisdom of the Spiritual Exercises, prayer, reflection, and case studies. Our presenters are:
Carol Atwell Ackels is Director of the Ignatian Spirituality Institute in Dallas, Texas. A spiritual director in the Ignatian tradition, she serves as a retreat director for the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius in a variety of formats and offers workshops and formation programs that support others in growing in the Ignatian tradition and the art of spiritual accompaniment.
Fr. Michael Graham, SJ, is a Jesuit priest, spiritual director, and retreat director with a deep commitment to Jesuit mission and Ignatian spirituality. A native of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, he entered the Jesuits in 1978 and was ordained in 1988. He served as president of Xavier University from 2001 to 2021, where he was a strong advocate for Jesuit mission, interreligious dialogue, and justice. In retirement, Fr. Graham devotes himself to pastoral ministry, including retreats and spiritual accompaniment, and to helping others deepen their understanding of Jesuit mission and identity.
The retreat-workshop is open to spiritual directors and retreat directors—lay, religious, clergy—who desire to deepen understanding and develop practices following the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius of Loyola.
$300 payable upon registration—includes workshop materials, private en suite rooms, towels and linens, meals, and a beautiful prayerful campus.
